President’s Message: March 2022

Read Full eNews

The month of March tends to be a very busy time of year for all of us at ACFP. The countless hours of planning and hard work for staff and members alike comes to fruition in the form of our flagship conference – the Family Medicine Summit (Summit). Although we were unable to meet in person once again, there were still plenty of opportunities to socialize, share, and support one another. Thank you to all who were able to join us throughout the Summit weekend and kudos to the Scientific Planning Committee and the ACFP staff for making the 67th Summit another memorable event. It was truly wonderful to see so many of you there.

Annual Meeting of Members Update

Another event traditionally connected to the Summit is the ACFP’s Annual Meeting of Members (AMM) which was held virtually for a second time on March 15th. This year, we witnessed tremendous engagement and support from our members after presenting my annual report reflecting all ACFP’s events and achievements. Our members approved the audited financial report as well as the appointment of the auditor and the nominations for President-Elect, Dr. Noel DaCunha, and our newest member to the Board, Dr. Melanie Hnatiuk. Congratulations to both! I am looking forward to working with both Noel and Melanie in their new roles on our ACFP Board.

Throughout the AMM, members engaged us in meaningful dialogue on topics such as advocacy and truth and reconciliation. I can promise you; these discussions are front of mind for all of us on the Board. I look forward to continuing to address the issues and concerns that matter to you, because they also matter to our patients, families, and our communities.

Recognize a Peer

It is not always easy to take the roads less travelled, but when we dare to do so, we often stumble upon our greatest fulfillments. So often we forget that the accolade of action is as important as the action itself and without it, daring greatly can be daunting. With that said, I end this message with one request, that as the month winds down please consider recognizing a trailblazer in your circle for an ACFP Award. Whether it be a student, resident, peer, or practice/clinic, there is a category for all and a need to celebrate our collective achievements. Nominations for the 2022 ACFP Awards close on April 1st and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Sudha Koppula BSc, MD, MClSc, CCFP, FCFP

My name is Smitha Yaltho and I feel privileged to work as a family physician. Why? I believe that being a family physician has been the best job any physician can hope to have. I have personally grown in my own abilities and skill-sets with diverse opportunities in ambulatory practice, acute care and work in Facility Living.  Working in primary care has been exciting and has also afforded me tremendous opportunities for growth while still remaining stimulating in its complexity.  I believe that Family physicians are trusted partners in patient care –  every step of the way.

Why are you volunteering to serve on this committee?
I currently have an interest in Physician Leadership and  trauma informed care.  I have served as a director with the Board of Directors with the Edmonton North PCN, Edmonton’s largest PCN. Thereafter, I have worked as the Director of Medical Services with CapitalCare (also based in Edmonton) for almost 6 years. It is my express wish that my contribution on the ACFP board of directors will highlight the excellence of family medicine that exists right here and now within the Alberta health care system.

What about the ACFP’s work do you find most valuable?
Ability to highlight and further support the excellence of primary care right here in Alberta.
