June 1 – The History of War on Drugs and the Opioid Crisis, Dr. Christy Sutherland


Join Dr. Christy Sutherland to explore the history of the war on drugs in North America, its deep systemic roots, and its impact on the opioid crisis. After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Recall the history of substance use in a Canadian and North American context
  • Describe the war on drugs and its origins in systemic racism and political ideology
  • Integrate this knowledge to develop novel health programs to care for people who use drugs


Dr. Christy Sutherland
Dr. Christy Sutherland is a family doctor and diplomat of the American Board of Addiction Medicine who works in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side providing care to Canada’s most vulnerable population. Dr. Sutherland is the Medical Director of the Portland Hotel Society where she leads a team of physicians and nurses who are embedded in low barrier, harm reduction projects.

June 8 – Alberta Wildfires: Capturing lessons learned for the next emergency response

The Alberta College of Family Physicians is pleased to create a collaborative space for members and primary health care workers to come together to discuss lessons learned during an emergency response. Join Dr. Sarah Smith of Edson and Erica Snook-Pennings of the Edson Friendship Centre as they discuss their experiences during the recent wildfire evacuation order that hit their communityu2014the challenges they faced to equip the most vulnerable population and what they would like to see happen in future emergency response initiatives.




June 15 – Unpacking the Standards of Practice: Common pitfalls and tips to avoid them, Dr. Charl Els


At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe three common non-compliance issues around the Responsibility for Medical Practice standard
  • List some tools and tips around complying with the Ethics, Patient Content, and Continuity of Care standards
  • Illustrate a framework for a potential “Standards of Practice” assessment


Dr. Charl Els
Charl Els is a fellowship-trained addiction psychiatrist and an occupational physician. He serves as Assistant Registrar in Continuing Competence at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. He is the author of several systematic reviews and the Editor of a textbook on tobacco control. Els is a recipient of the QE II Platinum Jubilee Award for his contribution to mental health in Alberta.
