Message to Members: An advocacy update on team-based care

Dear ACFP Members:

As the summer months draw to a close and we head into a busy fall season, the ACFP continues to be active in our advocacy and partnership efforts. Our activities and advocacy efforts are rooted in our strategic priorities and support our Modernizing Primary Health Care System (MAPS) submission.

This includes having representatives sit on the MAPS Implementation Committees and spearheading an inaugural Team-based Primary Health Care (TPCA) Forum. The invitational forum is presented in collaboration with the Coalition for Primary Health Care and brings together interdisciplinary health care leaders motivated to co-design, build, and commit to the supports and frameworks to optimize team-based primary care.

Who’s in the room?
Key leaders and partners have been invited to represent the broad scope of primary care in Alberta, including professions, planners, policy makers, patients, and citizens. Organizations represented include but are not limited to:

  • Alberta College of Family Physicians
  • Alberta Indigenous Virtual Care Clinic
  • Alberta Health
  • Alberta Health Services Indigenous Wellness Core
  • Alberta Medical Association
  • Alberta Pharmacists’ Association
  • Alberta Primary Care Nurses Association
  • Behavioural Health Consultants
  • Imagine Citizens Network, President
  • Nurse Practitioners Association of Alberta
  • Primary Care Networks (i.e., Executive Directors, Physician Lead Executive)
  • Social Workers Association of Alberta
  • Department of Family Medicine, University of Alberta
  • Department of Family Medicine, University of Calgary

Our hope with the Forum is to begin identifying the necessary supports needed to implement team-based primary care in Alberta, informing policy, determining structures (e.g., funding, training, accessibility), and committing to change.

Suggestions or Comments
The one-day forum will include a mix of panel presentations and facilitated workshops. Should you have any comments or suggestions that may assist us, please feel free to contribute. Our host will compile common themes from your responses.

The ACFP welcomes your thoughts regarding this update. Please email Executive Director, Terri Potter (terri.potter@acfp.ca) or ACFP President, Dr. Noel DaCunha (acfppres@acfp.ca).

Sincerely,
Noel DaCunha, MBBS, CCFP

My name is Smitha Yaltho and I feel privileged to work as a family physician. Why? I believe that being a family physician has been the best job any physician can hope to have. I have personally grown in my own abilities and skill-sets with diverse opportunities in ambulatory practice, acute care and work in Facility Living.  Working in primary care has been exciting and has also afforded me tremendous opportunities for growth while still remaining stimulating in its complexity.  I believe that Family physicians are trusted partners in patient care –  every step of the way.

Why are you volunteering to serve on this committee?
I currently have an interest in Physician Leadership and  trauma informed care.  I have served as a director with the Board of Directors with the Edmonton North PCN, Edmonton’s largest PCN. Thereafter, I have worked as the Director of Medical Services with CapitalCare (also based in Edmonton) for almost 6 years. It is my express wish that my contribution on the ACFP board of directors will highlight the excellence of family medicine that exists right here and now within the Alberta health care system.

What about the ACFP’s work do you find most valuable?
Ability to highlight and further support the excellence of primary care right here in Alberta.
