Executive Director’s Message: May 2022 – World Family Doctor Day

Read Full eNews

These past two years have shown that, throughout a pandemic, amid political stresses, burnout, and endless challenges, family doctors have and continue to show up, providing support and care for their patients. You continue to dig in every day as you lead with compassion, resilience, and enthusiasm in the face of adversity.

FULL OF GRATITUDE

With World Family Doctor Day fast approaching, I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you on behalf of the ACFP and reshare with you our Heart of Family Medicine Gratitude video. This video is comprised of just a few of the Family Docs Rock patient stories we have heard throughout the years of running our Family Docs Rock campaign, and more recently our Heart of Family Medicine campaign. We hope that this short compilation helps you realize just how many lives you touch every day in your practice and over the course of your career. Big or small, the work you are doing as a family physician makes a difference.

CELEBRATE WORLD FAMILY DOCTOR DAY

This year’s World Family Doctor Day theme is Family Doctors, Always There to Care. This theme perfectly encompasses the unique role of the family physician; often in patients lives from birth to old age, through celebration and tragedy, always there to care. Throughout the month of May, we have been celebrating World Family Doctor Day and tomorrow, we would love for you to join us! For posters, graphics, social media messages, and more, visit www.familydocsrock.ca. Help us show the world how positive, inspiring, and compelling being a family doctor really is.

We thank you again for all you do and from the bottom of our hearts, we wish you a happy World Family Doctor Day!

Sincerely,

Terri Potter
Executive Director
Alberta College of Family Physicians

My name is Smitha Yaltho and I feel privileged to work as a family physician. Why? I believe that being a family physician has been the best job any physician can hope to have. I have personally grown in my own abilities and skill-sets with diverse opportunities in ambulatory practice, acute care and work in Facility Living.  Working in primary care has been exciting and has also afforded me tremendous opportunities for growth while still remaining stimulating in its complexity.  I believe that Family physicians are trusted partners in patient care –  every step of the way.

Why are you volunteering to serve on this committee?
I currently have an interest in Physician Leadership and  trauma informed care.  I have served as a director with the Board of Directors with the Edmonton North PCN, Edmonton’s largest PCN. Thereafter, I have worked as the Director of Medical Services with CapitalCare (also based in Edmonton) for almost 6 years. It is my express wish that my contribution on the ACFP board of directors will highlight the excellence of family medicine that exists right here and now within the Alberta health care system.

What about the ACFP’s work do you find most valuable?
Ability to highlight and further support the excellence of primary care right here in Alberta.
