Document and Results Routing Optimization Address-level Delivery Method (Specific to Provider Location/clinic)

On August 25, 2024, Alberta Health Services (AHS) Connect Care will be able to deliver more clinical documents and results to providers at specific locations/clinics (typically where you see the patient, rather than a single default community location). To facilitate these improvements, your location and delivery method set-up in Connect Care may be updated.

In early July, providers who work at more than one location/clinic and/or have electronic delivery (eDelivery) direct to their EMR Inbox were sent a letter via fax (or in a few cases, by mail) to the location which Alberta Health Services (AHS) has on record as your primary/default location.  This letter asks you to confirm results delivery methods and locations. Changes to this information need to be returned to AHS by August 19, 2024.

Many providers will continue to receive results where and how they do today. Mixed-context providers (providers who work at AHS using Connect Care and in the community using another legal record of care) will be able to choose a primary address other than the Connect Care In Basket. If you make this choice, results for tests ordered when working at AHS, that are currently received via Connect Care In Basket, would be sent to the default clinic. Results will always also be available in the patient’s chart in Connect Care.

To choose a routing preference, consider where you want to receive results if no other location is indicated. In most cases, the best choice for the primary location is where you work most often. For providers that work both at AHS and in the community approximately equally, and are a primary care provider (PCP), you may prefer to choose an AHS location as their primary.  The system will use the relationship you have with a patient as their PCP, when known, to help redirect information to where you see the patient (overriding the default).

This change is one in a series of steps to optimize the delivery of documents and results from Connect Care, and will not reduce the number of duplicate results providers receive. With this change, in more cases, duplicate results will be received at the same location. Future optimizations planned for early 2025 should significantly reduce duplicate results delivery. For more information, see the Connect Care Results Routing Optimization Overview.  Community DI (e.g., Mayfair, MIC) and other community services are not impacted by this change. Lab results will be added to this delivery optimization on September 23, 2024.

My name is Smitha Yaltho and I feel privileged to work as a family physician. Why? I believe that being a family physician has been the best job any physician can hope to have. I have personally grown in my own abilities and skill-sets with diverse opportunities in ambulatory practice, acute care and work in Facility Living.  Working in primary care has been exciting and has also afforded me tremendous opportunities for growth while still remaining stimulating in its complexity.  I believe that Family physicians are trusted partners in patient care –  every step of the way.

Why are you volunteering to serve on this committee?
I currently have an interest in Physician Leadership and  trauma informed care.  I have served as a director with the Board of Directors with the Edmonton North PCN, Edmonton’s largest PCN. Thereafter, I have worked as the Director of Medical Services with CapitalCare (also based in Edmonton) for almost 6 years. It is my express wish that my contribution on the ACFP board of directors will highlight the excellence of family medicine that exists right here and now within the Alberta health care system.

What about the ACFP’s work do you find most valuable?
Ability to highlight and further support the excellence of primary care right here in Alberta.
