In a collaboration between the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta and the Office of Rural and Regional Health, GROW North is a two-year research program designed specifically for family physicians practicing in regional, rural, and remote areas. Its goal is to bridge the gap between rural practice and scholarship by providing physicians with the skills and tools to pursue questions relevant to their practice and the communities they serve.

The program spans 2 years (September 2026 – September 2028) and each participant is partnered with a dedicated research mentor. Year 1 consists of six hybrid learning modules that cover the entire research and knowledge mobilization process, featuring asynchronous resources, assignments, and synchronous lectures held approximately every two months.

Eligibility:

Family physicians:

  • actively practicing in central/northern Alberta or the Territories;
  • in regional, rural or remote practice for at least 1 year; and
  • able to commit the time to participate in the program.

Cost:
Tuition is free and travel costs for in-person sessions (e.g. mileage, meals, accommodation) will be covered by the program.
