The Alberta College of Family Physicians Celebrates Award Recipients for Excellence in Family Practice
The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) is pleased to announce Sundre-based Dr. Vesta Michelle Warren as Alberta’s Family Physician of the Year (FPOY) for 2025.
This recognition honours outstanding family physicians who best exemplify what being a family doctor is all about: providing exceptional care to their patients, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of their community and society in general, and dedicating themselves to the education of future generations of family doctors.
In her nomination package, Dr. Warren is described as “a local mentor for the care of complex patients within their medical home while they are awaiting specialty care and the local resource for women’s health across the spectrum… Where the community has a need, Michelle finds a way to meet it. She is a fantastic mentor and role model for learners and embodies the joy that can be derived from family medicine done well. She has fun with her patients, her team, and her learners. She is constantly smiling, laughing, dancing, and making her patients feel better just by her presence.”
Dr. Warren’s Work in Rural Family Medicine
Dr. Warren’s impressive involvement in the community, full scope family practice with rural lens, and many contributions to family medicine have made her rise above the rest of the FPOY nominees for this year’s award cycle.
Since 1999, Dr. Warren has practiced as a rural general specialist in Sundre, Alberta. Originally hailing from Claresholm, she has served in the Sundre Hospital for over 25 years providing low risk intrapartum care, acute care, and emergency care services. She has also provided comprehensive care to the community through the Moose and Squirrel Medical Clinic, which she co-owns. In addition, Dr. Warren shares her love for family medicine by teaching as a clinical associate professor at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. All of these things she has been juggling while raising a family of three with her husband, Rob.
