Dear ACFP Members,
I’m going to be frank with all of you: these past few weeks have been particularly heavy and I find myself feeling increasingly frustrated. Many of you have reached out to share similar sentiments, concerns, and questions regarding the recent flurry of government activity and the ACFP’s response to them. Thank you for doing so. As we steer through the challenges and opportunities in our profession, your unique experiences and perspectives are of immense importance to us. They are the fuel we need to remain resolute and unwavering in our organizational values and priorities.
Our work is far from over. Policy changes and legislative shifts are not new to us by any means, and at times can feel unrelenting. But please know that our efforts are not in vain; your continued support and involvement through these tumultuous times keeps our mission moving forward.
Below is a quick update on some of the efforts the ACFP is engaging in and monitoring. In the weeks and months to come, we plan to provide you with regular updates to help demonstrate our collective impact and plans moving forward.
Advocacy Updates
Two of the recent announcements from the Government of Alberta have particular implications for family medicine and the health care system in the province. On the government’s introduction of Bill 9, which invoked the notwithstanding clause on gender-affirming care, the ACFP reinforced its statement on gender-affirming care. It continues to take steps to advocate for evidence-based care, preserve the integrity of the physician-patient relationship, and patient well-being.
The government’s tabling of legislation allowing physicians to work in the public and private sectors is deeply concerning. In response, the ACFP published a statement on the importance of preventative care in the context of a longitudinal relationship and the need for further discussion, exploration, and consultation to ensure that the said legislation increases access and does not cause harm. This legislation follows the recent announcement about private purchase of diagnostic screening and testing, where the ACFP raised similar concerns.

These times can be profoundly challenging, both professionally and personally, and I want to assure you that the ACFP, as your professional home, is here to support you. The ACFP is striving to advocate for family physicians, champion family medicine, and ensure that perspective is heard at every opportunity.
