Dear ACFP Members,
I am pleased to share that our Annual Meeting of Members (AMM) during the 71st Family Medicine Summit was a success. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with our members about the work we do and what will shape our strategic priorities in the year ahead. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who attended the AMM. Through your strong participation and thoughtful engagement, we achieved quorum, approved key motions, and had meaningful discussions that will truly help inform our next steps.
The past year was defined by collaboration and resilience across the full spectrum of family medicine practice in Alberta—community-based care, hospital and acute settings, rural generalist roles, academic leadership, focused practices, and the many hybrid practices our members support. I am proud of the tenacity and leadership shown by our community during these times of rapid policy changes and mounting pressures on the health care system.
Program Updates and Key Milestones
Throughout my first year as president of the ACFP, we worked on driving home a consistent message: family medicine is the foundation of our health care system. Ultimately, our aim has been to propose solutions that are reflective of your needs and perspectives and support your ability to provide high-quality care.
From our member engagement to programs that underscore the value of family physicians, we saw strong growth in your participation and involvement across our communications and feedback channels, volunteer opportunities, networking spaces, early-career programs, and awards and recognition programs.
Advocacy was an area of major momentum in 2025. Our work elevated issues affecting family physicians across all practice settings. We also led and supported critical conversations on team-based primary care models, administrative burden reduction, equity in access, and legislative impacts on care delivery.
With collaboration at the heart of our strategy, we supported the evolution of key partnerships, including the Coalition for Primary Health Care and the Primary Care Physician Alliance.
To ensure that family medicine remains at the forefront of Alberta’s health system transformation, the ACFP, with the support of the Alberta Medical Association-Accelerating Change Transformation Team, delivered its first ever Family Medicine Innovation Forum (FMIF).
Continuing professional development (CPD) continues to be a core offering of the ACFP with members completing more than 31,000 Mainpro+® activities worth a total of more than 350,000 credits in 2025. Another is research with 54 abstracts submitted and six oral presentations and 24 in-person posters at the ACFP’s Research Showcase. You can read more about these highlights in the 2025 Year in Review
Looking ahead to 2026, we remain committed to supporting family physicians across all practice environments and to advancing a health system that recognizes the full value and leadership of our profession.
Member Forum
As our Board, Committees, and staff teams continue to champion the voice of Alberta family physicians, we appreciate every opportunity to gather feedback from members.
The Member Forum held right after the AMM provided a valuable, inclusive space to have an open dialogue and collaboration. By creating a platform where members shared their ideas, raised concerns, and discussed their perspectives, we have gained direct insight into what matters most to our community. We thank all participants for their engagement, transparency, and trust during the event. Feedback collected through the Member Forum will inform our strategic planning moving forward. For those who were unable to attend, you can still share your thoughts with us here.
Board Updates
I invite you to keep the lines of communication open with us. Leave a reply below or share your thoughts, comments, and any other concerns you may have by sending an email through acfppres@acfp.ca. Thank you again for your continued support.
Yours Sincerely,
Melanie Hnatiuk, MD CCFP FCFP
