President’s Message – April 2025

Read Full eNews

With the ACFP’s advocacy for adequate funding for primary health care, we have seen incredible engagement from you, our members, about the work we are doing. I value your feedback and acknowledge your suggestions that inform us of our next steps to strengthen our position and reiterate our priorities with the government. On behalf of the Board and the staff team, I am thankful for all your trust, unwavering commitment, and support for what we do at the ACFP.

Over the past month, we have had Board Member Donna Mumert, Board Liaisons Karanpreet Bath and Emily Cox, and Operational Committee members Drs. Tina Nicholson, Brandon Ng, and Sierra Tamminen completing their terms of commitment with the ACFP. These departures can be bittersweet, but they also offer a chance for us to practice gratitude. I would like to take this moment to thank our peers for their contributions and many hours of volunteer work to promote the value of family practice in Alberta.

While farewells are never easy, they also open the way for us to engage with new members. It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Drs. Smitha Yaltho, Munib Ali, and Lee Green, who joined our Board of Directors, Family Medicine Resident Board Liaisons Drs. Tania Luthra and Matthew Machan, Medical Student Board Liaison Liv Taylor, and new Member-at-Large Dr. Shirley Samuel-Haynes, who recently joined our Member Engagement and Recognition Committee. Your great enthusiasm inspires us to stay focused on our commitment, and I eagerly anticipate our collaboration and synergy to advance our programs at the ACFP. Learn more about our Committees and our available volunteer opportunities here.

On the topic of gratitude, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Terri Potter for her amazing contributions as Executive Director of the ACFP. In her tenure spanning 14 years, she has demonstrated tenacious but collaborative leadership, expanded the ACFP’s government relations and advocacy efforts, and sat at various tables to represent the voice of family physicians across the province. Her trailblazing milestones are captured in this short presentation.

While the Executive Director selection process is well underway, the Board is working with Terri to reinforce our government relations initiatives and strategic priorities in this time of transition. In May, we will welcome and introduce the next person who will be taking over this pivotal role.

If you have any thoughts or ideas on how we can better support you and align our efforts with your priorities, please reach out to me at acfppres@acfp.ca. Your feedback matters and I am anticipating great outcomes from our working together on issues that are important to us.

Yours Sincerely,

Melanie Hnatiuk, MD CCFP
