In Memoriam

It is with great sadness and profound respect that the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) share news of the passing of two of its long-standing members. These remarkable family physicians made significant contributions and have left an indelible mark on their communities, peers and patients, the University of Alberta, and the College.

Jill Konkin, BA (Hons), MClSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FRRMS (1950-2025)

Most recently, Dr. Konkin served as an active member of the Membership Engagement and Recognition committee (formerly known as the Awards and Recognition Committee , 2018-2024, serving two years as chair). She generously shared her expertise, vast experiences, and insights on improving the award criteria year after year. Dr. Konkin was also a past president of the ACFP in 1999 and was supporting the ACFP’s initiatives for decades, championing and advocating for family medicine at every opportunity. Her tireless commitment as a rural family physician, a mentor to young physicians, and a source of wisdom for colleagues will always be remembered.

Andrew Cave, MB, ChB, MCISc, CCFP, FCFP, FRCGP (1947-2025)

Dr. Andrew Cave was an active family medicine researcher and professor at the University of Alberta. Recognized for his efforts in research from the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s (CFPC) Lifetime Achievement in Family Medicine Research Award 2016, Dr. Cave was a dedicated volunteer. In 2020, Dr. Cave was named the ACFP’s Family Physician of the Year and represented Alberta among Canada’s top doctors with the CFPC’s Canada’s Family Physicians of the Year – Reg L. Perkins Award. His commitment to improving the quality of family medicine within his community and within Alberta and to teaching students and residents to be compassionate family doctors will echo in the people he inspired and the community he helped build.

On behalf of the ACFP Board of Directors and staff, we would like to pass along our condolences to all who were touched by these outstanding individuals and pillars of the family medicine community.

One Response

  1. I trained under Andrew Cave for my family medicine residency. He was the best teacher, best role model, and just best guy to share some fish and chips with. I was lucky enough to reconnect with him a few years ago to share a meal and tell him the difference he made in my life. I will continue to try to be the best family physician every day to carry on his legacy. He will be missed.
