Advocacy in Action: A Year of Agility and Impact
Dear ACFP Members,
As I look back on my first year with the ACFP, I am deeply grateful for your trust and I am inspired by the strength and generosity of Alberta’s family medicine community. This has been a year of rebuilding relationships, elevating our advocacy presence, and reaffirming our commitment to advancing primary care grounded in the Patient’s Medical Home.
This year marked a shift—from reacting to change to helping shape it.
Across the province, I heard a consistent message: family physicians want a system that enables continuity, comprehensiveness, coordinated services, and team-based care anchored in long-term relationships. These values shaped our advocacy priorities and informed every conversation with government and system partners.
2025 Highlights
A highlight was our submission for the Alberta Budget 2025, which called for an increase in investment in team-based primary care. We advocated for the primary care system to be fully funded and resourced to ensure timely health care access for all Albertans, decrease impacts on acute care, and address health workforce challenges.
Our impact was amplified through collaboration. We worked with the government and health organizations to bring forward solutions grounded in lived experience and evidence.
This year also marked the launch of the Family Medicine Innovation Forum. Designed to showcase forward-thinking ideas, foster collaboration, and inspire transformative approaches to primary care, the Forum reflects our commitment to innovation and positions the ACFP as a leader in shaping the future of family medicine.
I am immensely proud of the ACFP team. Small in size but highly skilled and adaptive, they navigated rapid policy changes, delivered timely membership communications, and supported advocacy efforts—all while maintaining operational excellence and high-quality education.
Looking Ahead
In the coming year, the ACFP will continue advocating for the stability, sustainability, and respect that family physicians and your patients deserve. Our priorities include:
- Strengthening support for comprehensive, longitudinal family medicine
- Continuing MAPS engagement as implementation progresses
- Monitoring proposed legislation and advocating for equity-based primary care
- Pushing for team-based investments that reflect real-world needs
- Ensuring your voice remains at the centre of every conversation
Thank you for staying engaged, for sharing your realities, and for the care you provide every day.
With appreciation,
Georgina Altman, MBA
