I’m Dr. Simon Colgan and I’m a full time palliative doctor working in hospital and community, and running a downtown mobile program to the shelters (CAMPP – Calgary Allied Mobile Palliative program) campp.ca.
I joined the Task Force to represent our palliative program and also homeless and vulnerably housed individuals at end of life.
Though CAMPP we know first-hand the impact of the opioid crisis. Unfortunately, poor knowledge surrounding addiction/mental health/opioid crisis in some of my medical colleagues creates barriers for people at end of life due to fear, stigmatization, etc. This compounds end of life difficulties in our downtown population. Through ACFP we can be a voice for marginalized populations to prevent unnecessary barriers by providing education and guidance to our medical colleagues.
