Monkeypox in Alberta: What community physicians need to know

Location: via Zoom
Date: Wednesday, June 29, 2022
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

This webinar is designed to support physicians and their teams in caring for patients with Monkeypox by providing information on testing, vaccination, clinical management, and an update on cases in Alberta. It will respond to common and emerging questions from community providers about Monkeypox. Participants will have time to ask questions related to managing patients including:

  • How Monkeypox cases are currently presenting in Alberta
  • What guidance is available to ensure physicians feel confident assessing patients
  • Advice and support for testing, vaccinating, and treating patients

All Alberta community physicians and clinic staff who are interested in learning more about Monkeypox are invited to join this session. We encourage physicians to share the webinar details with their clinic staff who may be assisting patients calling the clinic inquiring about Monkeypox.

Learning Objectives:

  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what Monkeypox is, how it’s transmitted, and signs and symptoms of Monkeypox
  • List the steps in supporting an outbreak including vaccination, testing and patient management

The webinar will be recorded. If you are unable to join live, you can view the webinar on the AMA’s past webinars webpage within a few days after the event.

My name is Smitha Yaltho and I feel privileged to work as a family physician. Why? I believe that being a family physician has been the best job any physician can hope to have. I have personally grown in my own abilities and skill-sets with diverse opportunities in ambulatory practice, acute care and work in Facility Living.  Working in primary care has been exciting and has also afforded me tremendous opportunities for growth while still remaining stimulating in its complexity.  I believe that Family physicians are trusted partners in patient care –  every step of the way.

Why are you volunteering to serve on this committee?
I currently have an interest in Physician Leadership and  trauma informed care.  I have served as a director with the Board of Directors with the Edmonton North PCN, Edmonton’s largest PCN. Thereafter, I have worked as the Director of Medical Services with CapitalCare (also based in Edmonton) for almost 6 years. It is my express wish that my contribution on the ACFP board of directors will highlight the excellence of family medicine that exists right here and now within the Alberta health care system.

What about the ACFP’s work do you find most valuable?
Ability to highlight and further support the excellence of primary care right here in Alberta.
