We are proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of this year’s recipients of the ACFP’s Student Leadership – Rising Star and Family Medicine Resident Leadership Awards. These individuals have demonstrated the utmost dedication, perseverance, and leadership, earning the admiration of their peers, mentors, and community.
Student Awards
Congratulations to this year’s honourees Talia Campbell from the University of Alberta (U of A) and Erin Zader from the University of Calgary (U of C). Both of whom have shown not just academic excellence but a passion for rural family medicine.
Talia is a fourth-year medical student at the U of A who promoted family medicine specialty through her role as the lead of the Family Medicine Interest Group and completed an integrated longitudinal clerkship in Sylvan Lake, AB.
Erin is a third-year medical student at the U of C. Originally from La Glace, near Grande Prairie in northern Alberta, Erin draws inspiration from her rural roots in her service. Sher served on the Family and Rural Medicine Interest Group at the U of C and mentors undergraduate students through the Pathways to Medicine program, supporting those from rural and Indigenous communities.

Resident Leadership Awards
Three family medicine residents have shown remarkable skills, leadership, and commitment to advancing family medicine. They turned challenges into opportunities to grow, learn, and lead with purpose. Congratulations to Dr. Stephan Guscott from the U of A; and Drs. Pauwlina Cyca and Kapilan Panchendrabose from the U of C.
Dr. Guscott is a recent graduate of the U of A’s rural Red Deer program and currently completing a residency victory lap enhancing his emergency medicine skills with the U of A Family Medicine-Emergency Medicine (FM-EM) program. His colleagues describe him as relentless in the pursuit of excellence – academically, clinically, and in service to others.
Dr. Cyca is a recent graduate of the U of C’s Family Medicine Residency Program, where she served as Lead Resident for the Northwest division and President of Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA). A former pharmacist and passionate advocate for physician wellness and health system equity, she brings a rich, multidisciplinary lens to her work.
Dr. Panchendrabose is currently a second year rural Family Medicine resident in the University of Calgary’s Lethbridge program. He is a resident mentor through the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada and a tutor for several medical students at the U of C.
